Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Horses” by High Highs from the self-titled 2011 EP on Rocket Records.
Syndey transplants Jack Milas (guitar, vocals) and Oli Chang (synth, vocals) miss the warmth and embrace they felt from its vibrant music scene. But it wasn’t until meeting future band member Zachary Lipkins (drums) after uprooting to Brooklyn’s music scene that they zeroed in on their musical identity as High Highs. Fusing their love of singer-songwriters like Neil Young with Oli’s love of the synths and textures associated with dance music, the band possesses a sound that is one part acoustic guitar, one part chillwave, and one part indie rock. “Horses” is most indicative of that musical trichotomy and of the band’s modus operandi: to vibe out. Since releasing their self-titled EP in late 2011, High Highs have been compared to contemporaries like Beach House and Fleet Foxes as well as throwbacks like Simon and Garfunkel, and even Hall and Oates!
According to their Facebook page, their debut album is “almost done.” While there aren’t any upcoming tour dates listed, there is plenty of band-related content, such as interviews, photos, and music streams, to be found on there and also on their website and Myspace page.
